M&G Group of Italy (U.S. office in Houston), which claims to be the largest producer of PET packaging resins in the Americas, announced last month that it will build a 2.2-billion-lb/yr PET plant on the U.S. Gulf Coast. The plant will have a single reactor line employing M&G’s proprietary EasyUp SSP technology, which allows construction of plants over four times larger than those using commercially available technologies. This will be the largest yet built with M&G’s technology, and it will be paired with a 2.6-billion-lb plant for PTA feedstock. A site is expected to be chosen this month and construction time will be about 30 months. M&G says the time is right for the new plant, since PET industry supply/demand balance has been restored as a result of market recovery from the recession and the closure or sale of several North American PET plants in the last few years.
