APPLICATION: Newborn Hearing Screener Features New Opaque Copolyester
Eastman's new opaque copolyester replaces PC/ABS in newborn hearing screener housing.
The new Echo-Screen III hearing screener for newborns from San Carlos, Calif., is constructed of the new opaque Tritan copolyester MXF121 from Kingsport, Tenn. The bisphenol-A (BPA) free material, intended for use in hand-held and other medical device housings, boasts toughness and resistance to aggressive cleaners and disinfectants.
The device components were originally designed and tooled using a PC/ABS alloy. Natus selected the Tritan copolyester for its hearing screener over the PC/ABS because it does not contain BPA and trumps the alloy in terms of superior chemical resistance. The copolyester is also made without halogens and ortho-plasticizers. It meets UL 94 V2 rating at 1.5 mm, and it is also suitable for transducer housing applications that have contact with skin.
