What’s billed as the first-ever operation to recycle agricultural film into grocery sacks was launched last month when California bag maker announced the opening of sister company Encore Recycling. Encore will begin operating next month from a new 200,000 ft² facility in Salinas, Calif., where it will have capacity to recycle more than 100 million lb of film/yr.
Encore Recycling will wash and repelletize film supplied by local and multi-national growers. This material will subsequently be converted by Command Packaging into grocery sacks, tradenamed smarterbags, for California grocery stores. Well-known names such as Dole, Driscoll, Pacific Gold Farms, and Red Blossom Strawberries are reportedly working with Encore Recycling to ensure that their film is collected and recycled.
