WEB EXCLUSIVE: The kaleidoscopic visual appeal of Surlyn ionomer from DuPont Packaging & Industrial Polymers, Wilmington, Del., was exemplified last month at Luxe Pack 2012 in Monaco by Italian cosmetics packaging designer Lucchese Design. The company showcased a cream jar of the Sulhwasoo Dahamsul line of Korean cosmetics producer AmorePacific. Its distinctive printing effect is achieved with Surlyn overmolding technology.
The effect is achieved by printing on a nylon inner cup that is encapsulated by Surlyn. The process removes the gap between the inner cup and the outside packaging, eliminating light refraction that would diminish the appearance of the inner graphics and providing the premium cream jar a jewel-like, shining appearance. Surlyn’s high-gloss transparency and pleasant, soft touch is said to further enhance the jar’s appearance.
This was a first application with Surlyn for Lucchese, which has experience with various materials but has focused on glass. The application received a Silver award at the recent 2012 DuPont Packaging Awards honoring Excellence in Innovation.
